Provincial Policy on Charitable Giving - The Bishops of Florida recently adopted a policy regarding socially responsible charitable giving. The policy reiterates that we should refrain from giving to charities which support or contribute directly or indirectly to abortion, reproductive/ family planning rights, contraception or embryonic stem cell research. The Bishops of Florida specifically call attention to the following organizations, which support these morally objectionable ends and efforts, and state that neither individual Catholics, nor parishes and Catholic institutions should contribute to them. They are:
- UNICEF (supports contraception and abortion services)
- Amnesty International (changed position on abortion from neutral to supportive)
- Crop Walk/Church World Service (supports contraceptive services in overseas missions and programs)
- March of Dimes (supports embryonic stem cell research)
- Susan G. Komen for the Cure (evidence of grant-making to Planned Parenthood)
The Bishops of Florida state that, as a rule, individuals, parishes and Catholic institutions should support only those organizations listed in the Official Catholic Directory(the Kennedy Directory).
